The pattern of a Cretan patania, lifted from a loom in Anogeia.
In the weaving villages of Milopotamos, high above Anogeia in Crete, the patania was woven in two panels on a narrow loom and joined down the middle — a wool blanket dense with pattern, made to warm a house and last a lifetime. The Tagari Milopotamos takes its motif from one such double-panel patania, originally woven by Mrs. Dora Spachi: a black folk medallion set against natural cream, carried now on a bag instead of a bed.
The woven front is made on a manual loom, thread by thread in cotton, its surface textured where the pattern rises; the back is cotton canvas, and the interior is lined in cotton. Machine-sewn throughout for everyday strength, it hangs from a thick, soft cotton cord made to sit easily across the body — a tagari in the old mountain sense, made to be carried and to last.
