Byzantine iconography is not painting in the conventional sense. It is a sacred practice — one where the artist fasts, prays, and prepares before a single brushstroke is laid, understanding that what is being created is not an image of the divine but a window toward it. Every technique, every pigment, every layer of egg tempera applied to the wood carries the weight of a tradition that has remained essentially unchanged for over a thousand years.
Antonia Stamataki has spent her life inside that tradition. Working in Athens, she practises Byzantine iconography not as reproduction but as continuation — each piece an act of devotion as much as artistry. This icon of the Theotokos, the God-Bearer, depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child in the tender, timeless gesture that has brought comfort to Orthodox Christians across centuries of prayer. The Panagia — the All-Holy — rendered in authentic egg tempera on premium wood, at 40 cm wide, with a presence that fills a room before you have had time to look for it.
