The architects of the Erechtheion faced a problem. They needed columns. They chose women instead. Not because it was practical — stone figures draped in fabric are considerably more complex to carve than a simple fluted column — but because they understood that a building on the Acropolis deserved something more than structural support. It deserved meaning.
The Caryatids have stood on that hill for 2,500 years. Five remain in Athens. One is in London, waiting to come home. And in all that time, not one of them has let the roof fall.
