Achilles could have lived safely and been forgotten. His mother knew what the choice was — a long quiet life, or a short glorious one — and she tried to protect him from it. He chose glory anyway. Not because he did not understand the cost but because he understood it completely, and decided that a life without meaning was a longer kind of death.
He was the greatest warrior of his age. He was also the most human — capable of rage, grief, loyalty, and love in equal measure. The heel was not a flaw in his design. It was the point. The Greeks built their greatest hero with a vulnerability because without it, his courage would mean nothing.
