Ancient sole. Modern sole.
The tsarouhi is one of the most recognisable objects in Greek culture — the shoe of the evzones, the presidential guard who have stood at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier since 1868. It is heavy, deliberate, and unmistakable. A symbol not just of national pride but of the particular Greek ability to take something ancient and make it feel completely, perfectly current.
Caroline Rovithi understood this instinctively. Tsarouchi Air is her collision of the ancient and the contemporary — the ceremonial footwear of Greek independence rendered in the visual language of modern sneaker culture. The result is an image that makes you look twice and then think hard about what you just saw.
Printed in Greece on Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag 310gsm. Hand-signed by the artist. Available in 40, 60, or 90 cm square. Sold unframed so you frame it your way.
